The Market Assistant has the responsibility to assist in the setting up and tearing down of key aspects of the Saturday farmers market that happens at Depot Market Square. This is an outdoor venue located at 1100 Railroad Ave, Bellingham, WA. The Saturday farmers market is open to the public from 10 am – 2 pm. This year we are celebrating our 30th anniversary!

The Saturday Market can host up to 100 vendors. Vendors include farmers, food artisans and crafters. The market is a highly organized, bustling place for local commerce.

The Market Assistant works every Saturday during the market season (April through December) with work also available for our once per month markets in January, February, and March. Market Assistants work approximately 7-8 hrs/week, 7:30 am – 3:30 pm. Pay is $15/hour.

Additionally, there may be hours available for our Wednesday farmers market which operates June through September, at 300 West Laurel Street, Bellingham, WA. This market is open to the public 4-7pm.

The Market Assistant reports directly to the Operations Manager. The Market Director may also provide supervision and support as needed. Market Assistant responsibilities include the following:

  • Placement of signage around site including A-boards, banners and other signs as needed.

  • Set-up, clean-up and teardown of garbage totes, benches, canopies, info booth, etc.

  • Assist vendors as needed and appropriate to maintain a safe, attractive and accessible site

  • Answer questions from the public

  • Run on site food access programs, including usage of electronic EBT machine

  • Clean high touch surfaces like restrooms, kitchen, and Info Booth area

  • Ability to lift 50lbs and work during inclement weather conditions

 

The Bellingham Farmers Market has remained open during the Covid-19 pandemic. Our organization strictly follows all health-related protocols to ensure the safety of staff, vendors, and the public. BFM evaluates Covid-19 protocols on a regular basis and operational practices may change with time.    

Preferred Requirements:

·         High school diploma and some college experience preferred

·         Knowledge of customer service principles and processes

Key Competencies:

·         Good communication skills

·         Customer service orientation

·         High level of energy (especially in the morning)

·         Ability to stand for long periods of time

Additionally: patience, initiative, and integrity.
